Rear Brake Drum & Shoes: Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply Lubriplate to backing plate bosses, adjuster assembly threads and parking brake lever pin.
  2. Set adjustment assembly so brake shoes lightly contact brake drum. Depress brake pedal to center shoes, and check pedal travel. Rotate brake drum to ensure free movement.


  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply Lubriplate to backing plate bosses, adjuster assembly threads and parking brake lever pin.
  2. Before installing brake drum, set shoe outer diameter to 7.96-7.97" (202.2-202.4 mm). Install brake drum. Reverse removal procedure for remaining components.
  3. When installing wheel bearing nut, tighten it to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). Rotate brake drum a few times to seat bearing. Loosen nut, and retighten it to 84 INCH lbs. (9.5 N.m) while rotating brake drum. Install lock cap and cotter pin. Wheel bearing nut may be backed off a maximum of 15 degrees to align cotter pin holes.


  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply Lubriplate to backing plate bosses, adjuster assembly threads and parking brake lever pin.
  2. Set adjustment assembly so brake shoes lightly contact brake drum. Depress brake pedal to center shoes, and check pedal travel. Rotate brake drum to ensure free movement.
