Rod Bearings

  1. Using Plastigage, measure rod bearing oil clearance. Tighten bearing cap nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m), then an additional 1/4 turn. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS  and CONNECTING RODS  tables under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
    NOTE: Before installing connecting bearing caps, attempt to run nuts down bolts by hand. Replace bolt if nut does not run down smoothly for entire length of bolt.
  2. If oil clearance is incorrect, install a new bearing set and again measure oil clearance. If proper oil clearance cannot be obtained by using new bearings, replace crankshaft.
