Removal (2.4L)

  1. Release residual fuel pressure from fuel system. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE .
  2. Drain cooling system. Remove air intake hose and pipe from top of rocker cover. Disconnect all necessary electrical connectors, vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, fuel hoses and cables.
  3. On Van/Wagon, remove driver's seat and battery access cover. Lift and support passenger's seat. Remove parking brake lever and fuel tank door release lever. Remove seat underframe (section between seats). Remove radiator fan shroud and cooling fan assembly.
  4. On all models, remove power steering pump (with hoses connected if possible) and support away from work area with wire. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. On Van/Wagon, remove power steering pump bracket and engine oil dipstick tube.
  5. On all models, remove upper front timing belt cover. Turn crankshaft to TDC of compression stroke on No. 1 cylinder by aligning mark on cylinder head with mark on camshaft sprocket. See Figure.
  6. Remove rocker cover. Remove distributor cap. Mark rotor-to-distributor position. Mark distributor-to-cylinder head position. Remove distributor.
  7. Place reference mark on timing belt in alignment with timing mark on camshaft sprocket. Wire timing belt to camshaft sprocket to maintain correct position. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.
  8. Slide camshaft sprocket (with belt attached) off of camshaft. DO NOT  turn crankshaft. Using Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (MD998051-01), loosen cylinder head bolts (in 2-3 steps) in proper sequence. See Figure. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
