Removal (1.5L)

  1. Remove left under cover (if equipped). Support engine and remove engine mount located near timing belt cover. Loosen water pump pulley bolts. Remove all drive belts and drive pulleys from crankshaft and water pump.
  2. Remove timing belt covers and gaskets, noting bolt length and location. Rotate engine clockwise to align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with mark on cylinder head. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. See Figure.
    CAUTION: Engine must be rotated clockwise only. DO NOT  rotate counterclockwise. If timing belt is to be reused, place reference mark on timing belt to indicate direction of rotation prior to removal.
  3. Place mark on belt to indicate direction of belt rotation. Remove timing belt tensioner retaining bolts. Move tensioner inward toward water pump and temporarily tighten bolt in slot side of tensioner. Remove timing belt.
  4. If crankshaft belt sprocket requires removal, remove sprocket bolt, sprocket and flange (located behind sprocket). Note direction of flange installation.
