Removal (Mirage)

  1. To release fuel pressure, disconnect fuel pump connector. Fuel pump connector is located under rear seat cushion.
  2. With fuel pump connector disconnected, start engine and allow to idle until it stops. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal and reconnect fuel pump connector.
  3. Remove hood, air cleaner, battery and battery tray. Drain cooling system, and engine and transaxle oil. On turbo models, disconnect air pipes from turbo.
  4. On A/T applications, disconnect and plug transaxle cooler lines. Disconnect throttle and shift cables at transaxle. Remove bellhousing cover and torque converter-to-drive plate bolts.
    CAUTION: Transaxle cooler line location must be marked prior to removal. Lines must be installed in original location.
  5. On M/T applications, disconnect shift cable and clutch cable (if equipped) at transaxle. On models with hydraulic clutch, remove clutch cylinder with hydraulic line attached and secure to the body. On M/T models with 1.6L, disconnect tension rod connected to transaxle mounting bracket.
  6. On all applications, disconnect electrical connections and speedometer cable at transaxle. Remove starter motor and transaxle mounting bracket. Raise and support vehicle. From under vehicle, remove undercover. Disconnect and suspend exhaust pipe.
  7. Loosen nuts and disconnect ball joint and tie rod ends from steering knuckles. DO NOT  remove ball joint and tie rod end nuts.
  8. On all models except turbo with M/T, install pry bar between transaxle case and drive axle shaft. Pry drive axle shaft from transaxle. Pull drive axle shaft assembly from transaxle and support shaft assembly away from transaxle. Plug shaft openings in transaxle.
  9. On turbo models with M/T, use plastic hammer and tap on case located in front of center bearing on the inner shaft until drive axle shaft assembly is removed. DO NOT  tap on center bearing assembly.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  pull on drive axle shafts during removal or damage to shaft assembly will result.
  10. On all applications, remove bellhousing cover. Support transaxle with jack. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove transaxle assembly. Remove radiator and heater hoses. Remove radiator. Remove fuel lines, vacuum hoses and electrical connections from engine.
  11. Disconnect accelerator cable. Disconnect A/C compressor and power steering pump from engine (if equipped). Wire units aside.
  12. Install engine hoist and raise engine slightly. Remove all engine mount bolts. Remove engine assembly.
