Installation (1.6L)
- Lubricate camshafts with engine oil. Note that intake camshaft has a slit in rear of camshaft to drive crank angle sensor. Install camshafts with dowel pin area for camshaft sprockets facing toward the top, away from cylinder head.
- Bearing caps No. 2 and 5 are the same shape. Bearing caps are numbered on the top for order of installation and lettered for which camshaft the bearing caps should be installed on. Letter "L" indicates intake camshaft and "R" indicates exhaust camshaft. The No. 1 bearing cap only contains the letter for camshaft application.
- Install bearing caps. Ensure rocker arm is mounted on lash adjuster and valve stem. Tighten bearing cap bolts in 2 steps to specification using proper sequence. See Fig 2.
- Install Seal Guide (MD998307-01) on camshaft. Coat oil seal with engine oil and install on seal guide. Using Seal Installer (MD998306-01), install seal into cylinder head.
- Ensure dowel pin for camshaft sprocket on intake camshaft is facing upward away from cylinder head. Align punch mark on crank angle sensor housing with notch in plate. See Fig 3. Install crank angle sensor on cylinder head.
CAUTION:
Crank angle sensor must be installed with punch mark aligned with notch in plate or incorrect fuel injection and ignition timing will result.
