Timing Belt: Installation

  1. Install flange on rear crankshaft with chamfered edge facing away from cylinder block if removed. Install rear crankshaft sprocket and silent shaft. Install silent shaft sprocket (if equipped). Install rear timing belt and ensure timing marks are aligned. See Fig 1.
  2. Install rear tensioner but do not tighten bolts. Hold tensioner tight against belt while tightening bolts. Depress belt with finger to ensure that deflection is between .20-28" (5-7 mm). Install crankshaft and oil pump sprocket. Install camshaft and oil pump sprocket. Tighten camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to specification while holding hexagon area of camshaft. Install idler pulley.

  3. Install belt tensioner, tension spring and spacer. Ensure spring is properly engaged against front case. Rotate tensioner toward water pump and temporarily tighten retaining bolts. Ensure camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are aligned. See Fig 2. Install timing belt on crankshaft.
  4. Apply pressure on tension side of belt while installing belt on camshaft sprocket. Loosen tensioner to allow spring pressure application to timing belt. Rotate camshaft sprocket clockwise until timing mark is offset by 2 teeth to apply tension on belt. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. Tighten tensioner bolt.
  5. Tighten tensioner spacer. To check belt tension, apply slight thumb pressure to measure deflection between camshaft and oil pump sprocket. Belt deflection should be .55" (14 mm). To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Install rear timing belt covers (if removed). Install rear crankshaft sprocket, spacer, flange, washer and retaining bolts. Flange and crankshaft sprocket must be installed in proper direction.
  2. Install silent shaft sprocket and rear timing belt. Install rear tensioner but do not tighten bolts. Hold tensioner tight against belt while tightening bolts. Depress belt with finger to ensure that deflection is between .20-.28" (5-7 mm).
  3. Install crankshaft and oil pump sprocket. Install camshaft and oil pump sprocket. Tighten camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to specification while holding hexagon area of camshaft. Install idler pulley.
  4. Retract automatic tensioner rod into tensioner housing by placing tensioner assembly in a soft-faced vise. Push rod back into the automatic tensioner in small increments until both rod and housing holes are aligned. See Fig 1. Install a .055" (1.39 mm) diameter wire into the holes.
NOTE: If plug at bottom of tensioner protrudes past tensioner housing, place a washer over plug to prevent plug from contacting the vise when pushing rod into tensioner housing.
  5. Remove automatic tensioner from vise, with wire, and install. Install tensioner arm. Install tensioner pulley on tensioner arm with pin holes of tensioner pulley shaft to the left of the center bolt. Tighten center bolt.

  6. Rotate camshaft sprockets so dowel pins are facing upward and timing marks on sprockets are aligned. See Fig 2. Outer marks on sprockets should be aligned with cylinder head surface.
  7. When exhaust camshaft sprocket is released, camshaft will rotate one tooth in counterclockwise direction. This rotation will need to be compensated for when installing timing belt. Rotate crankshaft and oil pump sprockets to align timing marks.
  8. If used timing belt is installed, belt must be installed in original direction of rotation. Remove oil pump sprocket access plug from cylinder block. Insert Phillips screwdriver. If screwdriver can be inserted 2.4" (60 mm) or more, timing mark alignment is okay.
  9. If not, rotate oil pump sprocket one full turn. Keep screwdriver installed until timing belt is secured. Install timing belt around intake camshaft sprocket. Install spring clip on timing belt and camshaft sprocket to hold belt on the sprocket. See Fig 2.
  10. Install wrench on both camshaft sprocket bolts. Install timing belt around exhaust camshaft sprocket while holding camshaft sprocket bolt so timing mark on camshaft is aligned with timing mark.
  11. Install spring clip on timing belt and camshaft sprocket to hold belt on the sprocket. Install timing belt around idler pulley, oil pump sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and tension pulley in this sequence.
  12. Remove both spring clips. Rotate tensioner pulley inward toward timing belt until belt does not sag and temporarily tighten center bolt on tensioner pulley. Ensure all timing marks are aligned.
  13. To adjust belt tension, rotate crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise and then back clockwise until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. Ensure timing marks are aligned. Loosen center bolt on tensioner pulley. Note pin holes in tensioner pulley.
  14. Socket wrench is used to rotate tensioner pulley. Using INCH lb. torque wrench and Socket Wrench (MD998752), apply a torque of 22-24 INCH lbs. (2.5-2.7 N.m) on tensioner pulley. See Fig 3. With torque applied to tensioner pulley, tighten tensioner pulley center bolt to 31-40 ft. lbs. (42-54 N.m).

  15. Install Set Screw (MD998738) in left engine support bracket until the end contacts tensioner arm. See Fig 4. Rotate set screw additional turns until wire can be removed from automatic tensioner. Remove set screw.
Fig 4: 2.0L DOHC Timing Belt Adjustment Measurement

  16. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 complete revolutions and allow to remain in this position for approximately 15 minutes. Measure distance between tensioner arm and automatic tensioner body. Distance should be .15-.18" (3.8-4.5 mm).
  17. If this distance cannot be measured due to lack of clearance, an alternate method can be used. Install set screw until it contacts the tensioner arm. See Fig 4.
  18. Rotate set screw inward while counting number of turns until the tensioner arm contacts the automatic tensioner housing. Set screw should screw inward 2 1/2-3 turns if belt tension is correct. Remove set screw. Install rubber plug in rear timing belt cover.
  19. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Apply sealant to correct areas on semi-circular packing and rocker cover prior to installation. Ensure correct bolt is installed in timing belt covers.
