Removal (2.4L)

  1. Remove breather hoses and air cleaner. Remove valve cover and upper front timing belt cover. Turn crankshaft to TDC of compression stroke on No. 1 cylinder by aligning mark on upper inner cover with mark on camshaft sprocket. See Figure.
  2. Make reassembly mark on timing belt in alignment with timing mark on camshaft sprocket. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Slide camshaft sprocket (with belt attached) and oil seal off camshaft. DO NOT turn crankshaft. Ensure belt is prevented from disengaging from crankshaft.
  3. Loosen rocker shaft mounting bolts uniformly and lift off rocker shaft, rocker arms and springs as an assembly. Using Rocker Arm Sleeve (MD998443-01), secure auto-lash adjusters from falling out. Remove rocker arms and rocker shafts as an assembly. Remove oil seal and distributor drive gear from camshaft. Remove camshaft.
