Removal (Galant)

  1. Disconnect fuel pump connector at rear of fuel tank. Start engine and allow to idle until it stalls. Turn ignition off. Disconnect battery cables. Reconnect fuel pump connector. Remove hood. Drain cooling system, engine oil and transaxle oil. Remove radiator and cooling fan assembly.
  2. Remove transaxle assembly. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL article. Remove fuel lines and vapor hoses from engine. Disconnect heater hoses at firewall. On DOHC models, disconnect electrical connectors from ignition coil and crank angle sensor. On SOHC models, disconnect electrical connectors from distributor, power transistor condenser, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Motor Position Sensor (MPS).
  3. On all models, disconnect electrical connectors from coolant temperature sensor, coolant temperature sending unit, fuel injectors, idle speed control servo motor, oxygen sensor, power transistor and EGR temperature sensor (Calif. only). Disconnect electrical connectors from A/C compressor, alternator, and oil pressure switch. See Figure.
  4. Remove starter motor wiring and engine ground cable. Disconnect all vacuum hoses to engine. Disconnect power steering pump and A/C compressor leaving hoses attached and secure with wire away from work area.
  5. If necessary, discharge A/C system and remove compressor from vehicle. Attach hoist to engine hooks. Remove upper engine mount bracket assembly. Raise engine slightly. Ensure all cables, hoses and electrical harnesses are disconnected from engine. Remove engine assembly upward from vehicle to remove from engine compartment.
