Removal (2.0L)
- Disconnect fuel pump connector at fuel pump. Start engine and allow to idle until it stalls. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect fuel pump connector.
- Remove fuel lines and vapor hoses from engine. Drain cooling system and disconnect air intake hose. Remove radiator fan shroud, hoses and cooling fan assembly. Remove breather hose and air cleaner. Remove vacuum hoses, fuel hose and coolant hose.
- Label and remove spark plug wires. On SOHC models, disconnect electrical connectors from ignition coil and crank angle sensor. On DOHC models, disconnect electrical connectors from distributor, power transistor condenser, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Motor Position Sensor (MPS).
- On all models, disconnect electrical connectors from coolant temperature sensor, coolant temperature sending unit, fuel injectors, idle speed control servo motor, oxygen sensor, power transistor and EGR temperature sensor (Calif. only). Disconnect electrical connectors from A/C compressor, alternator, and oil pressure switch.
- Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Disconnect power steering pump and A/C compressor clamp. Support engine and remove upper engine mount bracket. Remove rocker arm cover. Remove upper timing belt cover. Align camshaft timing marks. See Figure.
- Remove camshaft sprocket. Ensure belt stays on crankshaft sprocket. Loosen cylinder head bolts using Head Bolt Wrench (MD998051-01), in REVERSE
of tightening sequence. See Fig 1 or Fig 2
. Loosen head bolts in 2 or 3 steps to prevent cylinder head warpage. Remove bolts and cylinder head.
