Camshaft Timing Belt Adjustment

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove upper front timing belt cover or timing cover access cover (if equipped). Check timing belt for cracks or peeling. Turn crankshaft in clockwise direction only and position second tooth past timing mark on camshaft sprocket, in alignment with timing mark on cylinder head. See Fig 1.

  2. Using a screwdriver, pry out timing belt tensioner adjustment bolt and nut access covers, located in lower front timing belt cover, above and to the right of timing mark indicator.
  3. Loosen belt tensioner nut and bolt 180-200 degrees. DO NOT  loosen more than necessary, they might fall into lower cover. Insert screwdriver from top of timing cover. Slightly push tensioner toward belt, and then release.
  4. This will allow spring to readjust, using only its own spring pressure. First tighten tensioner mounting bolt located in lower access hole, then tighten nut in upper hole.
  5. Make certain bolt is tightened first. Tightening nut first will cause belt tension to be too tight. Install access covers and upper front timing cover. Reconnect battery.
