Rear Axle Hub Bearing: Installation

1. Press-fit new outer bearing to axle shaft, with seal side toward flange side of axle shaft. Position new inner bearing so seal side faces companion flange. Press-fit bearing using installer and driver.
2. Apply multipurpose grease (SAE J310, NLGI 2EP) to oil seal area of axle shaft. Using seal driver, press in oil seal until it contacts edge of axle housing. Install dust cover to axle housing.
3. Apply grease to oil seal lip. Insert axle shaft and spacer into housing and attach companion shaft. Place axle housing in a vise and tighten companion shaft nut.
4. Complete installation by installing axle housing to lower control arm and strut assembly. Using dial indicator, check axle end play for .031" (.79 mm).

To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust rear wheel bearings in the following order: Tighten nut to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). Loosen nut, then tighten to 84 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Install cotter pin. If necessary, loosen nut 15 degrees maximum.
