Rocker Arm Assembly & Camshaft: Removal

  1. Remove air cleaner, breather hoses, and purge line. Remove fuel pump and line. Remove fuel pump and line. Remove rocker cover and gaskets.
  2. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing marks are aligned. See Figure. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove distributor assembly.
  3. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts and distributor drive gear. Pull camshaft sprocket and timing chain away from camshaft and place on top of camshaft sprocket holder. See Figure.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  allow timing chain to come off of camshaft sprocket during removal. DO NOT  rotate crankshaft after timing chain and sprocket are removed from camshaft.
  4. Install Auto-Lash Holder (MD998443) over end of rocker arm to retain auto-lash adjuster. See Fig 1. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts, rocker arms and rocker shafts as an assembly. DO NOT  allow components to separate during removal. Remove camshaft. Mark component location for reassembly reference.
CAUTION: Rocker arm component location must be marked for reassembly reference.
