Removal (Except Conquest & Starion)

  1. Drain cooling system. Remove O2 sensor connector. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect all vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses and electrical connectors. Disconnect accelerator cable.
  2. Remove A/C drive belt (if equipped). Rotating crankshaft clockwise, position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing marks are aligned. See Figure. Remove spark plug wires and distributor assembly. Remove rocker arm cover and gaskets.
  3. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt and distributor gear. Pull camshaft sprocket and timing chain away from camshaft and place on top of camshaft sprocket holder. See Figure.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  allow timing chain to come off of camshaft sprocket during removal. DO NOT  rotate crankshaft after timing chain and/or sprocket is removed.
  4. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 2 steps using proper sequence. See Figure. Remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove manifolds as necessary.
CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts must be loosened in 2 steps and proper sequence to prevent cylinder head warpage or cracking.
