Removal (Conquest & Starion)

  1. Fuel pressure must be released. Remove floor panel located in baggage compartment. Start engine and disconnect fuel gauge wiring connector. Allow engine to stall and disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect wiring connector.
  2. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove brake master cylinder heat protector. Remove O2 sensor connector and air cleaner. Remove air hoses at turbo and intake manifold.
  3. Disconnect all vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses and electrical connectors. Disconnect accelerator cable, spark plug wires, and coolant temperature sending unit. Remove distributor.
  4. Remove rocker cover and gaskets. Disconnect oil feed and return hoses at turbo. Remove dipstick assembly. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Rotate crankshaft clockwise until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing marks are aligned. DO NOT  rotate crankshaft counterclockwise. See Fig 1.

  5. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt and distributor gear. Pull camshaft sprocket and timing chain away from camshaft and place on top of camshaft sprocket holder. See Fig 1.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  allow timing chain to come off of camshaft sprocket during removal. DO NOT  rotate crankshaft after timing chain and sprocket are removed.
  6. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 2 steps using the proper sequence. See Figure. Remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove manifolds as necessary.
CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts must be loosened in 2 steps using proper sequence to prevent cylinder head warpage or cracking.
