Counterbalance Shafts: Removal

  1. Remove counterbalance drive chain as previously described. Remove oil pump. See OIL PUMP under ENGINE OILING in this article. Remove right counterbalance shaft. See Fig 1.
  2. Install 2, 8 mm bolts in thrust plate. Evenly tighten bolts to remove thrust plate while supporting front of left counterbalance shaft. Remove left counterbalance shaft. See Fig 1.

NOTE: If oil pump driven gear-to-counterbalance shaft locking bolt is hard to loosen, remove the oil pump and counterbalance shaft as an assembly.
