Counterbalance Drive Chain: Installation

  1. Install counterbalance shaft sprockets in drive chain with timing marks aligned with plated links of drive chain. See Fig 1. Counterbalance shaft sprockets must be installed with offset in proper direction.
    CAUTION: Counterbalance shaft sprockets must be installed with offset in proper direction. Sprocket teeth must be positioned closed to counterbalance shaft on right shaft and away from shaft on the left side.
  2. Install crankshaft sprocket in drive chain with timing mark toward front of engine and aligned with plated link. Ensure mating marks on all sprockets are aligned with plated links. Install sprockets and chain. Install chain guides.

  3. Rotate counterbalance shaft sprockets, to position chain slack at point "P". See Fig 1. Pull chain inward in direction "L" and adjust chain guide "B" so clearance between guide and chain at "P" is within .008-.031" (.20-.79 mm). Tighten guide bolts to specification.
  4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Always use new gaskets. Use Seal Installer (MD998376) to install timing chain case oil seal. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specifications.
