Piston & Rod Assembly: Installation

  1. Lubricate all internal surfaces with new engine oil before installing. Install new rings on piston. Check ring end gap and side clearance. Ensure ring end gaps are positioned properly. See Fig 1. Ensure "FRONT" mark on piston is positioned properly. See Fig 1. Thoroughly oil piston and rings and install piston in cylinder from which it was removed.
  2. Use Plastigage method and check all bearing clearances. Correct bearing clearance if not within specifications. Check rod side play. See MAIN & ROD BEARINGS table at end of this article. Tighten rod nuts to specifications.
