Main Bearings Service

  1. Remove flywheel or drive plate. Remove rear plate and rear seal case. Remove timing chain as previously described. Ensure connecting rods and main bearing caps are marked with cylinder number and engine front.
    NOTE: DO NOT  rotate crankshaft with Plastigage installed.
  2. Remove main bearing caps. Rods do not need to be removed if replacing main bearings only. Remove rod caps if replacing crankshaft. Remove main bearings. Using Plastigage method, check bearing clearance on all bearings and correct as necessary.
    CAUTION: Note type of bearings and location. Bearings may contain different type of lubrication holes.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts evenly in 2 or 3 steps to specifications. With bearings installed, check crankshaft end play. Adjust end play if not within specifications. See MAIN & ROD BEARINGS  table at end of this article.
