Rocker Shaft Assembly & Camshaft: Inspection

  1. Inspect rocker arm cam contact surface for pitting and wear. Check adjustment screw contact surface for wear and out-of-round. Inspect rocker shaft bore for loose fit on shaft.
  2. Inspect rocker arm shaft for wear on rocker arm contact surfaces. Inspect camshaft for wear and damage on journals, lobes, fuel pump drive cam, distributor drive gear and oil seal contact surface.
  3. On 1.8L turbo models, if camshaft lobe height is less than 1.641" (41.68 mm), replace camshaft. On 2.0L models, if camshaft lobe height is less than 1.637" (41.57 mm), replace camshaft. On 2.4L models, if camshaft lobe height is less than 1.649" (41.88 mm), replace camshaft.
  4. Ensure oil holes in rocker arms and rocker shafts are clear. Inspect camshaft bearing for wear. Replace cylinder head if bearing is excessively worn. Inspect oil seal lip for damage and replace if required.
