Main & Connecting Rod Bearings: Notes

  1. Inspect each bearing for peeling, melting, seizure or improper contact. Replace defective bearings. Measure outside diameter of crankshaft and connecting rod journals to determine if out-of-round or tapered.
  2. Use Plastigage method to measure bearing clearance. If clearance exceeds limits, bearing should be replaced or undersize bearing installed. Undersize bearings are available in.25 mm.50 mm and.75 mm undersizes.
  3. Main bearing caps are installed with arrow directed toward front of engine and cap number in correct order. Gradually tighten cap bolts in 2 or 3 steps, before tightening to specification.
  4. Connecting rod bearing caps are installed with bearing insert locking tabs, located on same side of rod. Ensure crankshaft turns freely and end play is within specification, after completing bearing installation.
