Cylinder Head & Manifolds: Removal

  1. Drain cooling system. Remove breather hose and air cleaner. Disconnect necessary wiring. Remove vacuum and coolant hoses. Disconnect accelerator linkage and spark plug wires. Position cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Remove distributor, throttle body or carburetor, and intake manifold.
  2. Remove exhaust manifold and gasket. On turbocharged models, remove heat shield and oxygen sensor. Remove turbocharger-to-catalytic converter nuts. Disconnect oil feed and return pipes. Remove air intake pipe connecting bolt and turbocharger mounting bolts. Remove turbocharger from exhaust manifold.
  3. On all models, remove crankshaft and water pump pulleys. Remove timing belt front upper and lower covers. Mark timing belt, indicating direction of rotation, if belt is to be reused. Remove timing belt, camshaft sprocket and valve cover.
  4. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts. On 2.0L and 2.4L engines, install Auto-Lash Adjuster Holder (MD998443) on rocker arm to make sure adjusters do not fall out. Remove rocker shaft assembly and camshaft. Loosen cylinder head bolts, in reverse of tightening sequence, using Head Bolt Wrench (MD998051-01). See Figure.
