Timing Belts & Sprockets: Removal

  1. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove crankshaft and water pump pulleys. Remove upper and lower front timing belt covers.
  2. Relieve camshaft timing belt tensioner pressure and secure tensioner toward water pump. If camshaft timing belt is to be reused, mark belt with an arrow indicating direction of rotation and remove belt.
  3. Remove oil pump sprocket, if necessary. See OIL PUMP REMOVAL. Loosen right silent shaft sprocket mounting bolt just until it is loose enough to be removed by hand. Remove belt tensioner "B" and timing belt "B".
