Camshaft Timing Belt Adjustment Without Replacing Belt

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove upper front timing belt cover. Inspect entire belt for conditions listed in inspection procedure of this article.
  2. Turn crankshaft in clockwise direction only and position second tooth past timing mark, on camshaft sprocket, in alignment with timing mark on cylinder head. See Fig 1.

  3. Using a screwdriver, pry out timing belt tensioner adjustment bolt and nut access covers, located in lower front timing belt cover, above and to the right of timing mark indicator.
  4. Loosen belt tensioner nut and bolt 180-200°. DO NOT  loosen more than necessary, they might fall into lower cover. Insert screwdriver from top of timing cover, slightly push tensioner toward belt then release.
  5. This will allow spring to readjust, using only its own spring pressure. First tighten tensioner mounting bolt located in lower access hole, then tighten nut in upper hole.
  6. Make certain bolt is tightened first. Tightening nut first will cause belt tension to be too tight. Install access covers, upper front timing cover and reconnect battery.
