Removal & Installation (Galant)
- Start engine and disconnect the electric fuel pump connector. Allow engine to run out of fuel. Turn ignition off. Disconnect battery. Remove battery and battery tray. Drain engine oil, transaxle oil and radiator coolant. Remove hood and air cleaner assembly. Disconnect and label engine wiring harness connectors and position harness aside.
- Disconnect ground wires from right inner fender panel and firewall. Discharge air conditioning. Drain power steering fluid. Remove electronic controlled suspension compressor and reserve tank assembly, if equipped. Disconnect transaxle control cable. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose. Disconnect throttle and cruise control cables.
- Label and disconnect fuel return and high pressure hoses. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect heater hoses. Disconnect speedometer cable. Disconnect and plug A/C hoses at the compressor, if equipped. Plug openings in compressor to prevent contamination. Disconnect power steering hoses at the pump.
- Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipe from the manifold. Support exhaust pipe with wire. Remove knuckle from lower control arm ball joint using Remover (MB990778-01). Remove tie rod end from knuckle using Remover (MB990635-01). Remove drive axles from transaxle case and cap holes in transaxle case. Lower vehicle.
- Connect engine hoist and remove slack from sling. Remove engine mount and roll stopper retaining nuts. DO NOT remove bolts at this time. Disconnect cover from right inner fender panel. Remove transaxle mounting bracket bolts. Remove transaxle mounting insulator-to-bracket bolts. Remove transaxle mounting bracket.
- Lift engine slightly and remove engine mounting bracket and roll stopper bolts. Ensure all hoses, cables and wiring are disconnected from the engine. Remove engine while tilting transaxle side of engine downward.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Replace drive axle retainer ring. Tighten all mounting nuts and bolts to specification. Adjust transaxle control cable and throttle cable, as necessary.
