Cylinder Head & Manifolds: Removal
- Drain cooling system. Remove breather hose and air cleaner. Disconnect necessary wiring. Remove vacuum and coolant hoses. Disconnect accelerator linkage and spark plug wires. Position cylinder No. 1 at TDC on compression stroke. Remove distributor, throttle body or carburetor, and intake manifold.
- Remove exhaust manifold and gasket. If equipped with turbocharger, remove heat shield and oxygen sensor. Remove turbocharger-to-catalytic converter nuts. Disconnect oil feed and return pipes. Remove air intake pipe connecting bolt and turbocharger mounting bolts. Remove turbocharger and exhaust manifold.
- On all models, remove crankshaft and water pump pulleys. Remove timing belt front upper and lower covers. Mark timing belt, indicating direction of rotation, if belt is to be reused. Remove timing belt, camshaft sprocket and valve cover.
- Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts, in steps, and remove bolts. On 2.0L and 2.4L engines, install Auto-Lash Adjuster Holder (MD998443) on rocker arm to ensure adjuster does not fall out. Remove rocker shaft assembly and camshaft. Loosen cylinder head bolts, in reverse of tightening sequence, using Head Bolt Wrench (MD998051-01). See Figure.
NOTE:
If 2.0L or 2.4L rocker shaft assembly is disassembled, ensure rocker arms and auto-lash adjusters are installed in their original positions.
