Cylinder Head & Manifolds: Removal
- Remove air cleaner assembly. Drain cooling system and disconnect hoses at cylinder head and intake manifold. Remove breather and purge hoses, vacuum hose at distributor and purge control valve.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. On fuel injected models, remove air intake hose from injector body. Disconnect electrical connectors at injectors, ISC servo and throttle position sensor.
- Disconnect accelerator cable, spark plug wires and coolant temperature sending unit. Disconnect exhaust manifold from pipe. Remove air cleaner, fuel line, distributor and fuel pump. Remove vacuum hoses. Remove exhaust manifold, then intake manifold and carburetor (throttle body) assembly.
- Remove rocker cover and breather. Remove semi-circular seal. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Mark timing chain for reference, in-line with sprocket mark. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain and hang on sprocket holder.
- Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts. Leave bolts in end bearing caps so that rocker shaft can be removed as an assembly. Install Lash Adjuster Retainer Clips (MD998443) on rocker arms to ensure adjusters do not fall out of rocker arms. Remove rocker arms and shafts as an assembly. Remove camshaft.
- Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence. See Figure . Remove head bolts and lift off cylinder head, using care not to slide head, or twist sprocket and chain.
