Counterbalance Shafts: Removal

With counterbalance drive chain removed, remove oil pump mounting bolts. Insert screwdriver through plug hole in left side of block to keep silent shaft from rotating. Remove bolt holding oil pump driven gear and counterbalance shaft together. Remove oil pump mounting bolts and oil pump. Withdraw right counterbalance shaft.

NOTE: Align plated links with mating marks.

NOTE: If oil pump driven gear-to-counterbalance shaft locking bolt is hard to loosen, remove the oil pump and counterbalance shaft as an assembly.
Remove thrust plate, supporting front of left counterbalance shaft, by threading 8 mm diameter bolts into plate holes at same time. Withdraw left counterbalance shaft from cylinder block.
