Removing and installing/replacing left or right head airbag (version with sliding/tilting sunroof)

Special tools required: 

Attention! 

Operations on pyrotechnical devices may only be carried out by authorized experts.

Improper, unauthorized operations may result in serious dangers.

Unauthorized persons are strictly prohibited from performing any operations on this system. 

WARNING: Read and comply with safety instructions for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnical belt tensioners.
Failure to observe correct procedures can deploy the airbag and cause injuries.
A damaged head airbag must be replaced.
A damaged head airbag exhibits an impaired protective function and in extreme cases loses its protective function altogether.

Preliminary work needed: 

Follow instructions for unlocking and locking airbag plug connections.

Removal: 

Attention! 

Lay out protective mats to protect the interior equipment against shavings from the drilled-out rivets and damage.

Lay out protective mats in the relevant working area:

Use special tool 2 230 142 to unlock retaining clip (1).

Drill out rivet head (1).

Note instructions for the removal of rivets.

Unlock and remove the clamps (2) with the special tool 2 230 142.

NOTE: Release the additional clamp in this area (3) of the US version.

Drill out rivet heads (1).

Note instructions for the removal of rivets.

Release fixture (2).

NOTE: Drill out the additional rivet head in this area (3) of the US version.

Unlock and remove the clamp (1) with the special tool 2 230 142.

Unlock and disconnect connector (2) for gas generator.

Drill out rivet heads (3).

Note instructions for the removal of rivets.

Remove the gas generator with the folding pack.

Installation: 

Mount gas generator with folding pack.

Secure gas generator with rivets (3).

Follow instructions for riveting gas generators.

Connect connector (2).

Secure the clamp (1) on the body.

NOTE: Clamps (1) must not be damaged.
Replace defective guard controls (1).
Replace all clamps (1) after an airbag deployment.

Mount rivet (1).

Follow instructions for riveting rivets.

Mount the clip (2).

NOTE: Mount the additional rivet in this area (3) of the US version.

Secure the folding pack on the body with the clamps (2).

Mount rivet (1).

NOTE: Secure the additional clamp in this area (3) of the US version.
NOTE: Clamps (2) must not be damaged.
Replace defective guard controls (2).
Replace all clamps (2) after an airbag deployment.

Remove protective mats from vehicle.

Required follow-up work:
