Replacing left or right tie rod (Cooper)
Special tools required:
- 2 287 009
Attention!
If the surface of the rack is damaged (e.g. by corrosion), then the steering gear must be replaced!
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove the WISHBONE .
Removal:
Slacken nut (1).
Release tie rod (2) from swivel bearing.
- Determine the dimension (A) to simplify the following setting of the front axle
Loosen clamping bolt (1) and unscrew tie rod end.
Before disassembly, clean the tie rod, bellows and area around the bellows in order to prevent dirt ingress!
Loosen the CLIP (1).
Detach the bellows (2) from the steering gear.
Loosen the clip (1).
Detach bellows (2) from tie rod.
Attention!
To avoid damage to the rack and to the suspension mounting, shift out the rack only as far as necessary!
Release the tie rod (axial joint) from the rack of the steering gear by means of special tool 2 287 009.
Installation:
Unscrew the tie rod end from the new tie rod.
Screw on the tie rod (axial joint) on the rack.
Tighten the tie rod (axial joint) by means of special tool 2 287 009.
Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .
Grease tie rod at the fit of the bellows (1) with grease "FB-1 BMW part number 2 208 093".
Before the installation of the bellows, lightly grease the steering gear at the seat of the bellows with FB-1 lubricating grease.
Mount the bellows (2) to the steering gear.
Part : Replace the clip (1).
Secure the CLIP (1).
Position the bellows (2) on the tie rod.
Secure the clip (1).
Screw the tie rod end onto the tie rod until the dimension (A) is reached.
Insert the tie rod (2) into the swivel bearing.
Part : Replace nut (1).
Tighten nut (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 1AZ .
Tighten clamping bolt (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .
