32 13 070 Removing and installing electric steering box (EPS)
Attention !
Steering box:
Check connection of steering box for corrosion, clean contacts if necessary. STEERING GEAR MUST BE REPLACED if the corrosion is too far advanced.
Connecting line:
In the event of moisture/corrosion inside the two plug connections, check the insulation of the connecting line. If the insulation reveals any noticeable/striking features, partial replacement will be necessary. Otherwise it will be sufficient to replace the contacts or connector housing.
Attention !
The control head of the steering box must not under any circumstances strike other components!
Collision with other components may result in damage to the steering box!
Do not turn the steering wheel once the steering shaft has been detached from the steering box/steering column! If the lower section of the steering shaft is separated from the steering box/steering column, the steering column switch cluster may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
Necessary preliminary tasks :
- Remove FRONT AXLE complete.
Removal :
Loosen screws (1).
Remove heat shield (2).
Release screws (1).
Remove steering gear (2).
Installation :
Attention !
Bulkhead gasket (1) of electric steering gear (EPS) must always be replaced!
Remove gasket (1).
Clean surface on steering gear.
Part : Replace bulkhead gasket.
Stick on new gasket (1).
Align steering gear (2).
Part : Renew screws (1).
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 32 00 1AZ .
Place heat shield (2) in position and align.
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 32 00 2AZ .
Required follow-up work :
- Install FRONT AXLE .
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to the limit position. The airbag indicator light must not light up in the process.
- Carry out WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE .
