Replacing crankshaft (B38 engine) (Cooper Clubman base)

Special tools required: 

• 11 6 250
• 00 2 010
• 11 6 480

When replacing the crankshaft, the main bearing shells and connecting rod bearing shells must be replaced.

There must be no oil in the blind holes (risk of cracking)  .

Do not  wash off screw coating.

Incorrect assembly of the crankshaft bearing caps will result in damage to the crankcase.

Preliminary work needed: 

• Remove BOTH TIMING CHAINS .
• Remove FRONT BOTTOM TIMING CASE COVER .
• Removing all PISTONS .
• Remove COUNTERBALANCE SHAFT .

Removal: 

Check crankshaft SIDE CLEARANCE .

Fit special tool 11 6 250.

If the permitted side clearance is exceeded:

• Check crankshaft and guide bearing shells.
• Replace worn components.

The installation position must be maintained.

The main bearing cap 3 is installed as a thrust bearing.

Loosen the screws in the sequence (8) to (1).

Remove all main bearing caps.

Pay attention to oil hole in bearing shell.

Pay attention to installation position of CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARING SHELLS .

Installation: 

Replacement: REPLACE THE CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARING SHELLS .

Oil the bearing shells (1) to (4) with fresh engine oil.

Both locating grooves of the bearing shells inside the crankcase and on the main bearing cap must be mounted on one side.

Insert crankshaft (1).

Do not  install the main bearing cap in a position twisted by 180 degrees! Main bearing caps are coded to prevent incorrect assembly!

Align main bearing caps exactly.

Fit main bearing bolts.

Tighten main bearing bolts in sequence (1) to (8) (observe tightening specifications).

Tightening torque: 11 11 1AZ .

Check SIDE CLEARANCE .

Check COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF CRANKSHAFT .

Screw in all screws of vibration damper manually.

Turn crankshaft evenly with special tool 00 2 010 and special tool 11 6 480.

Required follow-up work: 

• Install COUNTERBALANCE SHAFT .
• Install all PISTONS .
• Install FRONT BOTTOM TIMING CASE COVER .
• Install BOTH TIMING CHAINS .
• Assemble engine
