Removing and installing/replacing rear left or right coil spring

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT:
  • Both coil springs on the relevant axle must be replaced only in the event of corrosion breakage!
  • The spring pads at the top and bottom must also be replaced when replacing the coil springs.
NOTE: The coil spring is located in the applicable BMW Electronic Parts Catalog under the item "Spring table" after the vehicle identification number has been entered and the optional equipments of the car have been selected.

Preliminary work needed: 

Removal: 

Remove wheel RPM sensor (1) from holder (2).

Secure special tool 2 358 630 with wheel studs to drive flange.

Support trailing arm with special tool 2 358 630 and workshop jack on wheel hub.

Release screw (1) for anti-roll bar link on trailing arm.

Release shock absorber (2) from trailing arm by unscrewing screw (1).

Lower workshop jack with special tool 2 358 630.

Place workshop jack to side.

NOTE: Special tool 2 358 630 can remain on wheel hub.

Pull trailing arm (1) down slightly.

Remove coil spring (2).

Installation: 

IMPORTANT: Incorrect assembly is possible.

The upper end of the coil spring (1) is flatter.

Part  : When replacing spring: Replace top (1) and bottom (2) spring pads.

Connect top (1) and bottom (2) spring pads to coil spring.

End stop of bottom spring pad must lie against end of coil spring.

When installing spring, pin (1) of bottom spring pad must be inserted into bore (2).

Pull trailing arm (1) down slightly.

Insert coil spring (2).

Insert workshop jack into special tool 2 358 630.

Press trailing arm upwards with special tool 2 358 630 and workshop jack until shock absorber can be screwed to trailing arm.

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 33 52 1AZ .

Position anti-roll bar link on trailing arm.

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 33 55 2AZ .

Lower workshop jack and place to one side.

Remove special tool 2 358 630.
