Removing and installing/replacing the Lambda oxygen sensor (B48 and B46 engine) (Cooper S and John Cooper Works)

Special tools required:

The cable of the Lambda oxygen sensor (1) is black.

The installation location of the Lambda oxygen sensor is in front of the catalytic converter.

WARNING: Risk of burning!

Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Attention! 

Damage to wires when disconnecting connectors and plug connections. 

Sheared wires can cause a short circuit.

Do not pull on cables when disconnecting connectors and plug connections.

Preliminary work needed: 

Removal: 

Unclip connector (1) of the Lambda oxygen sensor from bracket.

Unlock and disconnect connector (1) of the Lambda oxygen sensor.

Release cable of the Lambda oxygen sensor from holder inside the marked area.

Slightly bend up heat protection film (1).

Release Lambda oxygen sensor (2) with special tool 11 7 020.

Installation: 

Installation note: 

If an oxygen sensor is reused, thinly and evenly coat only the thread with NEVER-SEEZ compound OVERVIEW OF CONSUMABLES 4.3 .

The part of the oxygen control sensor which projects into the exhaust line (sensor ceramic) must not be cleaned or come into contact with lubricant. 

Screw in Lambda oxygen sensor (2) and tighten with special tool 11 7 020.

Tightening torque: 11 78 1AZ .

Properly install heat protection film (1).

Connect connector (1) of the Lambda oxygen sensor and clip in bracket.

Clip in cable of the Lambda oxygen sensor on holder inside the marked area.
