Replacing all valve springs (B48 and B46 engine) (Cooper S and John Cooper Works)

Special tools required: 

• 11 9 001
• 00 2 300
• 11 9 006
• 11 9 007
• 11 9 008
• 11 9 005
• 11 9 000
• 11 9 009
• 11 9 017
• 11 9 011
• 11 4 480

Preliminary work needed: 

• Remove CYLINDER HEAD .
• Remove ALL ROCKER ARMS .

Removal: 

Mount and bolt cylinder head on special tools 11 9 001 and 00 2 300.

Prepare special tools 11 9 006, 11 9 007 and 11 9 008 as pictured.

Turn special tool 11 9 006 over and insert as pictured.

Lock special tool 11 9 005 in the direction of the arrow.

Lock special tool 11 9 005 in the direction of the arrow.

Rotate cylinder head, using special tool 11 9 000, 180° into installation position.

Align special tool 11 9 009 in direction of valve axis. Select corresponding groove with special tool 11 9 017.

Press down valve spring on upper spring cup with special tools 11 9 009 and 11 9 017.

Valve spring can be held in pressed-down position with special tool 11 9 011.

Keep valve spring pressed down with special tool 11 9 017.

Use a magnet to remove valve keys (1) from valve (2).

Relieve load on valve spring. Remove valve spring and spring cup.

Set down valve spring, spring cup and valve keys in special tool 11 4 480 in an orderly manner.

Installation: 

Valve springs are marked in color (1).

Color for intake valves and exhaust valves:

• Blue

Install the valve spring so that the larger diameter (Y) points to the bottom spring cup.

If necessary, replace VALVE STEM SEALS .

Installation sequence:

1. valve
2. Valve stem seal
3. Valve spring
4. Top spring cup
5. Valve keys

Align special tool 11 9 009 in direction of valve axis.

Select corresponding groove with special tool 11 9 017.

Press down valve spring on upper spring cup with special tools 11 9 009 and 11 9 017.

Valve spring can be held in pressed-down position with special tool 11 9 011.

Keep valve spring pressed down with special tool 11 9 017.

Use a magnet to install valve keys (1) on valve (2).

Relieve load on valve spring.

Remove special tool 11 9 006.

• Install the CYLINDER HEAD .
• Install ALL ROCKER ARMS .
