Removing and installing/replacing exhaust camshaft (B36 engine) (Cooper base)
Special tools required:
- 11 9 000
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER .
Removal:
Release all screws in the sequence 8 - 1 in half-turns.
Remove roller tappet (9).
Remove the high pressure pump bracket (1) and the bearing cap (2).
Take exhaust camshaft (1) out of cylinder head.
Installation:
Attention!
Removal on engine :
Set engine to ignition TDC at cylinder No. 1.
Removed cylinder head :
When using special tool 11 9 000, it will be necessary to remove the aluminum strip.
Moisten all bearing positions (1) with motor oil.
Installation note:
Prior to installation of exhaust camshaft, ensure proper installation position of rocker arm (1).
Coat exhaust camshaft and bearing caps with motor oil.
Attention!
Rotate exhaust camshaft approximately 80° in direction of engine rotation to first cylinder TDC and screw in place.
The cam on the exhaust camshaft on the first cylinder points towards the middle of the engine.
After tightening the bearing cap, the exhaust camshaft on the mounting flats must be rotated back to first cylinder TDC.
Coat both bearing positions on high pressure pump bracket (1) and bearing caps (2) with motor oil.
Position the high pressure pump bracket (1) and the bearing caps (2) on the cylinder head.
The bearing cap (1) of the exhaust camshaft is a thrust bearing.
The bearing cap (1) is legibly labeled "A" from the intake side.
The bearing cap (2) is legibly labeled "A1" from the intake side.
Coat exhaust camshaft and bearing caps with motor oil.
Position both bearing caps on cylinder head.
Installation note:
Check the tensile strength of the screws for the bearing caps.
The illustration shows the screw with a tensile strength of 8.8 .
Installation note:
Check the tensile strength of the screws for the bearing caps.
The illustration shows the screw with a tensile strength of 10.9 .
Press down on the bearing caps and hand tighten the screws incrementally in the sequence 1 - 8 .
Join the screws in the sequence 1 - 8 in half-turns.
Note the tightening torque 11 31 1AZ .
Tighten screws in the sequence 1 - 8 .
Tightening torque 11 31 1AZ .
Coat the roller tappet (9) with motor oil and install in the high pressure pump bracket.
Required follow-up work:
