Removing and installing/replacing counterbalance shaft (B36 engine) (Cooper base)
Special tools required:
- 2 358 646
- 2 288 943
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove ENGINE WITH TRANSMISSION .
- Mount ENGINE ON ASSEMBLY JIG .
- Remove REAR TIMING CASE COVER .
- Remove LOWER FRONT TIMING CASE COVER .
Removal:
Lock counterbalance shaft in cylinder 1 TDC position with special tool 2 358 646.
Fasten special tool 2 358 646 to crankcase with screws (1).
Release screw (1).
Release both screws (1) and remove special tool 2 358 646.
Screw special tool 2 288 943 into counterbalance shaft to stop.
Release counterbalance shaft from gear (1) with targeted hammer taps on special tool 2 288 943.
Remove special tool 2 288 943.
Remove counterbalance shaft (1) in arrow direction.
Remove counterbalance shaft gear in arrow direction.
Installation:
Check both needle bearings (1) of counterbalance shaft.
If necessary, pull both needle bearings (1) off counterbalance shaft and replace.
Insert counterbalance shaft gear (1) into crankcase guide (2).
Install counterbalance shaft (1) into crankcase in arrow direction.
Gear (1) coding
Counterbalance shaft (2) coding
Bring counterbalance shaft (1) into contact with gear (2).
Insert screw (1) and tighten until it makes contact.
Lock counterbalance shaft in cylinder 1 TDC position with special tool 2 358 646.
Fasten special tool 2 358 646 to crankcase with screws (1).
Tighten down screw (1).
Tightening torque: 11 27 1AZ .
Release both screws (1) and remove special tool 2 358 646.
Required follow-up work:
- Install LOWER FRONT TIMING CASE COVER .
- Install REAR TIMING CASE COVER .
- Remove engine from ASSEMBLY JIG .
- Install ENGINE WITH TRANSMISSION .
