Removing and installing/replacing counterbalance shaft (B36 engine) (Cooper base)

Special tools required: 

Preliminary work needed: 

Removal: 

Lock counterbalance shaft in cylinder 1 TDC position with special tool 2 358 646.

Fasten special tool 2 358 646 to crankcase with screws (1).

NOTE: When counterbalance shaft is locked, marks on crankshaft and gear of counterbalance shaft must align.

Release screw (1).

Release both screws (1) and remove special tool 2 358 646.

Screw special tool 2 288 943 into counterbalance shaft to stop.

Release counterbalance shaft from gear (1) with targeted hammer taps on special tool 2 288 943.

IMPORTANT: Secure counterbalance shaft and gear against falling if necessary!

Remove special tool 2 288 943.

Remove counterbalance shaft (1) in arrow direction.

NOTE: Secure counterbalance shaft gear against falling if necessary.

Remove counterbalance shaft gear in arrow direction.

Installation: 

Check both needle bearings (1) of counterbalance shaft.

If necessary, pull both needle bearings (1) off counterbalance shaft and replace.

NOTE: Gear is guided over guide ring (1) in crankcase (2).

IMPORTANT: Marks on counterbalance shaft gear and crankshaft must align.

Insert counterbalance shaft gear (1) into crankcase guide (2).

NOTE: Secure counterbalance shaft gear (1) against falling if necessary.

Install counterbalance shaft (1) into crankcase in arrow direction.

IMPORTANT: Counterbalance shaft can only be installed in gear in one position.
Gear (1) coding

NOTE: For purposes of clarity, picture shows component removed.

Bring counterbalance shaft (1) into contact with gear (2).

NOTE: Schematic diagram on B37.

NOTE: Parts:  Replace screw (1).

Insert screw (1) and tighten until it makes contact.

Lock counterbalance shaft in cylinder 1 TDC position with special tool 2 358 646.

Fasten special tool 2 358 646 to crankcase with screws (1).

Tighten down screw (1).

Tightening torque: 11 27 1AZ .

Release both screws (1) and remove special tool 2 358 646.
