18 12 030 Replacing rear silencer (B36, B38)
Danger of burning and other injuries!
This repair work may only be carried out on an exhaust system which has cooled down.
Removal of the rear silencer must be carried out with the assistance of a second person.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove both rear tension struts.
- Support rear silencer with a suitable jack and secure against falling down.
Removal:
Loosen screws (1).
Remove cross strut (2) on rear axle support.
If the separation point line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the separation point by means of the pipe length on the new rear silencer.
Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer and mark.
Secure rear silencer against falling off.
Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.
Spray rubber mount (1) with lubricant and detach from exhaust system.
Replaced damaged rubber mounts.

Spray rubber mount (1) with lubricant and pull off from rear silencer.
Replaced damaged rubber mounts.
Parts: Rubber mount
Lower and remove rear silencer with assistance of a second person.
Installation:
Install new rear silencer and connect rubber mount (1) to rear silencer.
Connect rubber mount (1) to rear silencer.
Adjust new rear silencer and connect by clamp to center silencer.
Center clamp and tighten down.
Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ .
Install cross strut (2) on rear axle support.
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 33 31 2AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Check exhaust system for leak tightness.
