Removing and installing battery (Cooper Convertible)
Observe SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS for handling vehicle battery,
Comply with NOTES for disconnecting and connecting the vehicle battery and
INSTRUCTIONS on intelligent battery sensor (IBS).
To ensure the correct safety and convenience functions, install only the original vehicle battery (battery size and type) stored in the vehicle order. Observe NOTES on battery replacement.
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
- Remove BATTERY COVER .
Removal:
Loosen nut (1).
Remove battery ground lead (2) from the vehicle battery.
Unlock and disconnect connector (3).
Secure battery ground lead (2) at the side.
Release expanding rivet.
Remove the mounting for the gasket (1).
Release screw and remove tension strut (1).
Loosen nut (1).
Remove positive battery cable from positive battery terminal.
Pull the vent hose (2) off.
Release screw (3) and remove holder.
Remove vehicle battery (4).
Replacement:
Coat positive battery cable with special grease.
Installation:
Install vehicle battery (4).
Join holder with screw (3) and tighten.
Tightening torque 61 21 4AZ .
Fit and clip the vent hose (2) in.
Connect the positive battery cable.
Tighten nut (1).
Tightening torque 61 21 1AZ .
- Make sure the vehicle battery is correctly seated in associated mounting
- Make sure the vent hose (2) is properly routed.
Installation note:
The battery has two vent holes:
- One vent hole (1) must be closed correctly with a dummy plug.
- The vent hose (3) must be connected correctly at the other vent hole (2).
Always install the vent hose (3) with a downhill gradient to the outside!
No siphon formation!
Join tension strut (1) and tighten with screws.
Tightening torque 61 21 5AZ .
Join mounting for gasket (1) and secure with expanding rivet.
Join battery ground lead (2) on the vehicle battery.
Tighten nut (1).
Tightening torque 61 21 1AZ .
Connect connector (3).
Required follow-up work:
- Install the BATTERY COVER .
Install INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
