41 31 010 Outer Roof Skin Replacement (Version With Panorama Glass Roof): Notes

STRIP DOWN  vehicle.

Observe relevant procedures in BODY, GENERAL .

Remove or cover those vehicle components in the repair area which are susceptible to heat or dust.

Following new body parts are required:

  1. (1) Roof outer skin, panorama glass roof

Removing roof outer skin: 

Open weld joints in area (1).

Open brazed joints in areas (2).

Open brazed joints in areas (3).

Open welded connections in areas (1).

Shown without roof outer skin for purposes of clarity.

Release sealant in areas (1) and adhesive in area (2).

Take off roof outer skin.

Preparation of new part: 

Adjust roof outer skin to fit in conjunction with roof trim strips and secure.

In areas (1), set two 4.2 mm bore holes for blind rivets.

Remove new part and deburr holes.

IMPORTANT:

Bonding in outer skin area!

Do not grind/sand new part in area of bonding surfaces.

Installing roof outer skin: 

Clean all  bonding surfaces on vehicle and on new part with cleaning agent R1.

Apply sealant in areas (1) analogously to Series.

Apply adhesive in area (2).

Installation note: 

Gap in area (2) must not exceed 3 mm.

Apply adhesive in area (1).

Apply adhesive in area (1).

Place roof outer skin with helpers evenly and centrally on vehicle.

Fit roof strips for positioning.

Rivet roof outer skin in area of rear lid hinges with blind rivets.

Secure roof outer skin with 6 roof pliers (1) and 3 tensioning straps (2).

NOTE: To generate an optimum contact pressure, fit roof pliers according to the left graphic.

Rivet roof outer skin with 12 punch rivets in areas (2).

Set punch rivets in corners starting at a distance of approx. 200 mm.

Spread excess adhesive in roof trim strip channel.

Mounting surfaces of roof trim strip clips must not be moistened with adhesive.

After adhesive has hardened, seal roof outer skin in areas (1) with sealant.

Adapt stage (1) between roof outer skin (2) and A-pillar with emerging adhesive.

Remove excess adhesive.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any cleaning agents containing solvents.

Do not leave any traces of sharp edges as this could compromise the tightness of the subsequent bond.

After adhesive has hardened: 

In areas (3) (see graphic 41 42 25), install 2 EMC SCREWS .

IMPORTANT: Observe installation position of roof strips when positioning EMC screws.
