32 21 231 Replacing Left Or Right Tie Rod

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheel. Refer to WHEEL AND TIRES - REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS - COOPER .
After completing work, carry out electronic wheel alignment check. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES .
IMPORTANT:
To avoid damage to rack and to suspension mounting, move rack in as far as possible.
Clean rack and tie rod. Grease toothed area of rack, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids. The steering gear must be replaced if the polished surface of the rack is damaged (rust).

Release nut on tie rod end.
Press out tie rod end with special tool 32 3 090 (1).
Installation:
Replace self-locking nut. Tightening torque, 52 Nm.
Release tensioning straps and slide gaiter back. Release tie rod with special tool 32 3 200 and torque wrench (1).
Installation:
Tighten with special tool 32 3 200. Tightening torque, 80 +/- 8 Nm.
IMPORTANT:
Setting value on torque wrench 65 Nm = 80 Nm.
IMPORTANT:
Tie rods with lock screw connection: Tightening torque, 63 Nm.
IMPORTANT:
Tie rods with clamping ring screw connection: Tightening torque, 45 Nm.
NOTE:
Observe the repair instruction MANUAL & POWER STEERING
when replacing the power steering gear.
Installation:
Grease tie rod at taper (1) - this prevents the gaiter from rotating when the tie rod rotates.
Fit gaiter and tensioning straps.
