Removal & Installation

Remove upper section of steering column trim. See UPPER SECTION OF STEERING COLUMN TRIM  . Remove lower section of steering column trim. See LOWER SECTION OF STEERING COLUMN TRIM  . Detach steering spindle lower section from steering column. See LOWER SECTION OF STEERING SPINDLE  . Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  .

Disconnect plug connection for collector ring and ring antenna. When replacing steering column, replace screws (1). Remove collector ring unit. See Fig 1 .

On vehicles with CVT, detach cable of selector lever/ignition switch interlock. During installation, lock must engage in position. See Fig 2 .

Release screws (1). During installation, replace screws. Observe the following when replacing the steering column: modify ignition start switch, lock cylinder, and steering angle sensor. Stick on felt strips. See Fig 3 .

When installing steering column, make sure that steering column (1) is located above lug (2). Steering column (1) must rest uniformly on instrument panel carrier. See Fig 4 .

A felt strip measuring 15x125 mm must be stuck onto the new steering column (1) in area (2). See Fig 5 .

A felt strip measuring 15x50 mm must be stuck onto the new steering column (1) in area (2). Felt strips must be ordered from BMW and cut to size. See Fig 6 .
