36 12 001 Replacing a tire (removing and installing support ring): Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 540i, 2002 BMW 540i, 2001 BMW 540i, 2000 BMW 540i, and 1999 BMW 540i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Removal of the support ring is described separately from installation. Assembly sequence for removal and installation is different.

CAUTION: The support ring of the BMW limp-home system can only be removed after the tire has been destroyed (cut open).

Release air.

Remove old balance weights from both sides of wheel.

Press off outer and inner tire beads from rim shoulder.

NOTE: Coat tire in area of rim flange with water to make it easier to remove the tire from the rim.

The rim styling shown does not apply to the specified rim of E39 Protection.

NOTE: The outer tire beads can also be forced off the rim shoulders with a pneumatic/hydraulic removal roller (plastic).

Place tire with outer side facing downwards on a stable surface (workshop floor).

CAUTION: Insert knife max. 40 mm.
Do not damage innerlying support ring!

Cut open inner tire bead along all-round side decorative groove with a suitable knife.

Clamp wheel with cut open inner bead facing downwards on a tire fitting machine.

Detach outer bead with tire contact face from rim.

Remove rim with inner bead (remaining tire) and support ring from tire fitting machine.

Prepare special tool 36 1 410 (device for support ring removal) for rim mounting.

CAUTION: Different centering elements are required for the rims of E38/3 safety vehicles and E39 Protection.

Fit special tool 36 1 410/422 (centering) on special tool 36 1 410/411 (rim mounting).

Ensure that lifter mount (1) is moved to one side.

Fit rim with remaining tire (2) and support ring (3) on special tool 36 1 410/411 (rim mounting).

Press remaining tire (2) underneath lifter mount (1).

CAUTION: Following components of support ring must not be located in press-off area before lifter mount:
  1. Balance plug
  2. Support ring seam
  3. Wheel electronics

Align press-off area of support ring so that lifter mount (1) is located opposite spacer nub (2).

Screw on special tool 36 1 410/421 (adapter for rim support) with special tool 36 1 410/413 (rim support).

CAUTION: Different rim supports are required for the rims of E38/3 safety vehicles and E39 Protection.

Place special tool 36 1 410/413 (rim support) on rim and align in direction to lifter mount.

Screw on special tool 36 1 410/413 (rim support) with special tool 36 1 410/414 (screw) through opening in rim with special tool 36 1 410/411 (rim mount).

Tightening torque 20 Nm.

Coat following areas generously with tire fitting lubricant:

NOTE: Flat brushes are better suited than conventional round brushes.

Coat lifter mount (1) with tire fitting lubricant.

Pivot lever (2) upwards through 90°.

NOTE: Lifter mount (1) is pushed underneath support ring (3).

CAUTION: Ensure that working pressure in connected compressed air supply is at least 4 bar.

Close protective door (1) of device for removing support ring.

WARNING: In event of irregularities during removal procedure: Take foot off pedal switch immediately and identify cause.
Keep protective door closed in so doing.

Press pedal switch on special tool 36 1 410/417 (hydraulic pump) in "PUMP" direction.

Support ring is pulled over rim flange.

NOTE: Hydraulics of device will only function as long as protective door is closed.

Open protective door of device for removing support ring.

Remove support ring (1) from rim.

Remove rim with remaining tire from special tool 36 1 410/411 (rim mount).

Press pedal switch on special tool 36 1 410/417 (hydraulic pump) in "RELEASE" direction.

NOTE: Lifter mount returns to its initial position.

CAUTION: While wheel electronics (1) is installed, do not clean support ring (2) with high-pressure cleaners.
If necessary, remove wheel electronics.

Read out remaining running time of wheel electronics (1) via diagnosis program.

If necessary, replace wheel electronics.

Examine support ring for damage (cracks) in outer skin.

CAUTION: Balance plugs (1) must not protrude out of bead area.

Check positioning of balance plugs (1).

If necessary, press balance plugs back.

Mark support ring after removal with a permanent stroke (1).

NOTE: This marking documents the number of removal operations. Check raised and drop center measurements after max. five removal operations.
If you are in any doubt as to the number of removal operations, it is absolutely essential to check the raised and drop center measurements.

If necessary, check raised and drop centers of support ring with a suitable steel tape measure (1).

Specification for raised center (2) = 124.1 cm

Specification for drop center (3) = 114.8 cm

CAUTION: Replace support ring without fail if the ascertained raised or drop center measurement deviates from the specification.

Press inner bead (remaining tire) into drop center of rim.

Clamp rim with outer side facing upwards on tire fitting machine. Force off remaining tire over outer rim flange.

Visually check radial runout of rim.

If necessary, check radial runout with dial gauge.

Tolerances, refer to WHEEL AND TIRES - TECHNICAL DATA - 540i (E39) .
