36 12 001 Replacing a tire (removing and installing support ring): Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 540i, 2002 BMW 540i, 2001 BMW 540i, 2000 BMW 540i, and 1999 BMW 540i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Installation of the support ring is described separately from removal. Assembly sequence for removal and installation is different.

If necessary, install wheel electronics.

CAUTION: Carry out the following tasks on a cleaned workshop floor. In so doing, make sure no foreign bodies (large contaminants) get into the tire or support ring.

Lay special tool 36 1 410/416 (lashing strap) around support ring so that ABS ratchet on outer side (spacer nub side) touches outer edge.

In so doing, align support ring so that following components are not located underneath special tool 36 1 410/416 (lashing strap):

  1. Support ring seam
  2. Wheel electronics for RDC (tire pressure control)

Contract support ring with special tool 36 1 410/416 (lashing strap) by operating ABS ratchet several times. The oval created must have a dia. of approx. 40 cm at its narrowest point.

CAUTION: Observe allocation of tire and support ring.
If the support ring is fitted on the wrong side, there will be no possibility of correcting the error. The tire will have to be destroyed.

Marking on outer side of tire:

  1. (1) DOT
  2. (1) Direction-of-rotation specification

Marking on outer side of support ring:

  3. (2) Spacer nub on sidewall
  4. (3) Fabric tape

Place contracted support ring (ABS ratchet points outwards) in outer tire bead.

Using special tool 36 1 410/423 (tire iron), prevent support ring from slipping out of tire on rear side.

Place tire flat on a clean surface.

CAUTION: When working with special tool 36 1 410/423 (tire iron), do not damage fabric tape (1) around support ring.

Beginning in area of lashing strap: Lever outer tire bead with special tool 36 1 410/423 (tire iron) over support ring.

After raising on left and right, relieve tension on lashing strap with ABS ratchet by 2 notches.

Repeat procedure several times until support ring is completely enclosed by tire.

Relieve tension on lashing strap completely and pull out of tire.

If necessary, remove valve from rim.

Install new valve in rim with a commercially available valve fitting tool.

Align special tool 36 1 060 to rim that valve (1) is located under aperture (2).

Press special tool 36 1 060 with three journals onto rim.

Clamp rim with special tool 36 1 060 facing upwards on tire fitting machine.

Coat following areas carefully with tire fitting lubricant:

CAUTION: Before fitting, make sure tire and support ring are positioned on correct side:
Outer bead with DOT and direction-of-rotation specification point upwards.
CAUTION: Do not damage rim.
Only roll on inner beads of support ring and tire.

Place tire with support ring at an angle against rim.

Roll inner beads of tire and support ring in succession with fitting head over rim flange.

CAUTION: Do not damage rim.
After completely rolling on outer beads of support ring and tire, it is not possible to make any further corrections on the rim.

Turn support ring with tire until valve is located between two spacer nubs.

Distance (A) approx. 5 cm.

Roll outer beads of support ring and tire in succession with fitting head over outer rim flange.

Detach special tool 36 1 060 from rim.

NOTE: When rolling on, ensure the rolled-on outer bead of the support ring slips immediately into the drop center.

CAUTION: Support fin of special tool 36 1 410/423 (tire iron) at steep deep center sidewall only.

If necessary, lever outer bead of support ring with special tool 36 1 410/423 at fitting head into drop center.

NOTE: The support ring for the E39 Protection vehicle has a very high adhesion resistance on the rim. Alignment must therefore be carried out with a pneumatic/hydraulic plastic press-off roller.
Carry out this "leveling of the support ring" on both sides of the wheel. In so doing, press the press-off roller with a small advance onto the tire bead grooves.

Aligning outer bead of support ring plane-parallel to outer rim flange: Turn machine plate with press-off roller (1) several times.

CAUTION: Do not set wheel (uninflated) firmly on floor.

Remove wheel from tire fitting machine.

Rotate wheel and clamp at outer rim flange (styling side) on tire fitting machine.

Aligning inner bead of support ring plane-parallel to inner rim flange: Turn machine plate with press-off roller (1) several times.

Remove wheel from tire fitting machine.

Inflate complete tire as usual.

Balance tire.
