13 62 531 Replacing coolant-temperature sensor (M62)

NOTE: After completing work, fill and vent cooling system and check for leaks, refer to 17 00 039 BLEEDING COOLING SYSTEM AND CHECKING FOR WATER LEAKS .
Coolant, refer to OPERATING FLUIDS - RADIATOR .
Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit. Switch off ignition.

Cars with idle-speed control valves only: 

Unfasten plug connection (1).

Installation 

  1. Top up coolant.

Unscrew and remove double temperature sensor (1) for Digital Motor Electronics (DME) and remove coolant indicator.

Tightening Torque, refer to SENSOR FOR CONTROL UNIT in FUEL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - 540i.

Cars without idle-speed control valves only: 

Sensor is fitted on water pipe at front.

Disconnect vacuum lines (1).

Detach plug from sensor (2).

Unscrew sensor (2).

Tightening Torque, refer to SENSOR FOR CONTROL UNIT in FUEL SYSTEM - TIGHTENING TORQUES - 540i.

Installation 

  1. Replace sealing ring.

All cars: 

Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit, check faults in memory then cancel fault memory.
