Power Steering Gear: Removal

NOTE: Observe all waste disposal regulations.
  1. Draw hydraulic fluid out of container and do not re-use.
  2. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING COLUMNS - E38 & E39 article.
  3. Unscrew and remove splash guard.
  4. Remove heat shield.
  5. Remove hydraulic lines. See Fig 1.
  6. Unfasten nut. Press tie rod off pitman arm with special tool (32 1 190). See Fig 2.
  7. Remove pitman arm. Before untightening clamping screw (1), mark position of sliding pitman arm on the segment shaft. See Fig 3.
  8. Unscrew screw and slide universal joint off steering gear. See Fig 4.
  9. Remove steering gear from front axle support and, if necessary, separate plug connection to Servotronic unit. See Fig 5.
