Power Steering Gear: Installation

CAUTION:
If the steering gear is replaced, check the height from the pitman arm to the idler arm. See PITMAN ARM under ADJUSTMENTS.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Draw in steering gear on screw (1) until it abuts the front axle support and only tighten hand tight. Replace self-locking nuts. First tighten screw (2) and then screw (1). See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure that steering wheel and steering gear are in straight ahead setting. Determine center position of steering gear by halving the total deviation and aligning on marks. See Figure.
- Slide universal joint onto steering gear. Screw must locate in retaining groove of steering unit. See Figure. Replace self-locking nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Slide pitman arm up to mark. Mark (2) must be located in center of pitman arm. See Figure. Replace self-locking nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install tie rod to pitman arm. Ensure tapered spigot and bore are both free of grease. Replace self-locking nuts. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Replace sealing rings (D). See Figure. Tighten lines to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Bleed power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING SYSTEM .
