Power Steering Gear: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW 530i, 2002 BMW 525i, and 2001 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Observe all waste disposal regulations.
  1. Draw hydraulic fluid out of tank and do not re-use.
  2. Remove front wheels. See 36 10 300 REMOVING OR INSTALLING FRONT OR REAR WHEEL
  3. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING COLUMNS - E38 & 39 article.
  4. Assemble special tool (00 0 200) with special tool (00 0 201/202/204/208) and install. Secure special tool (00 0 200) to front suspension eye on engine. See Fig 1.
  5. Remove engine underguard. See 13 32 051 REPLACING FUEL FILTER (M54)
  6. Tighten screws (1, 2). See Fig 2.
  7. Release left and right engine mounts on front axle support and lift engine approximately 1.5 inches (40 mm) with special tool.
  8. Unfasten nut. See Fig 3.
  9. Remove left and right tie rod with special tool (31 2 240). See Fig 4.
  10. Unscrew hollow screws and seal bores. See Fig 5.
  11. Remove bolt and separate universal joint from steering gear. See Fig 6.
  12. Unfasten screws. Turn steering gear and remove to left side. See Fig 7.
