Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 42 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW M5, 2002 BMW 540i, and 2002 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL .
Take off collar (1). See Figure.
Lift out snap ring (2) and remove bush (3). See Fig 1.
Lift out steering spindle bearing. Take out bearing inner sleeve. See Fig 2.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Insert bearing inner sleeve with bevelled end pointing to steering lock. See Fig 3.
Fit bush (3). Attach snap ring (2) with special tool (32 1 090) and steering wheel retaining screw, tightening until it engages in groove on steering spindle. See Fig 4.
Check position of collar (1) relative to snap ring (2). See Figure.
