Steering Spindle (Lower) (E38): Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 42 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW M5, 2002 BMW 540i, and 2002 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove rear splash guard. Remove heat-protection shield from axle support if necessary.
  2. Remove lower trim from instrument panel. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL .
  3. Remove clamping bolt. Press down on steering spindle. See Figure.
  4. Remove clamping bolt. Slide steering spindle off steering gear. Disconnect and remove steering spindle. See Fig 1.
  5. To Install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure steering wheel and steering gear are in straight ahead setting. Determine center position of steering gear by halving the total deviation and aligning on marks. See Fig 2.
  6. Ensure rubber grommet is correctly located in end wall. Clamping screw lies in the locking groove of the steering unit. See Fig 1.
  7. Install clamping screw so that it lies in locating groove in upper steering spindle. See Figure.
  8. Replace self-locking nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
